About the Artist
John M Armleder’s varied oeuvre includes painting, sculpture and performance in installations which blur boundaries of artwork, environment and exhibition space. His aesthetic combines elements of Op, Pop, readymades and geometric abstraction. In the series Furniture Sculpture, Armleder creates painterly interventions on used furniture, suggesting painting as furniture and furniture as painting. Early influences include the composer and visual artist John Cage, and the Fluxus movement. Armleder was a founding member of the Geneva based Suisse Ecart Group, which starting in 1969 pursued a Fluxus-like agenda. In the 1980s, Armleder was linked with Neo-Geometric Conceptualism, commonly known as Neo-geo.
John M Armleder’s works are held in prominent collections including the Rubell Family Collection and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. He participated in the Venice Biennial in 1986, the Singapore Biennale in 2006 as well as the Prague Biennial in 2008. An exhibition surveying Furniture Sculptures was mounted by the Swiss Institute New York in 2011.
