About the Artist

Melissa Kretschmer’s wall-mounted assemblages bridge painting and sculpture with their material sensitivity and iconic geometries. Kretschmer works with stark, evocative materials: glass, beeswax, graphite, wood and pigments. The native qualities of these materials – their color, texture, transparency, opacity –including incidental marks, stains and scratches–react through the layers of the works. As Kretschmer states, “What happens on the surface begins deep within.”

Kretschmer earned an MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Her work has been exhibited since the early 90s nationally and internationally. She has been featured in museums exhibitions, including: the Boulder Museum of Art, The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation of Pepperdine University, and PS1 Museum in Long Island City, New York. She is included in Painting After Postmodernism, curated by Barbara Rose on view through November 13th.
